Oceanwide Expeditions is a Dutch pioneer in ship-based polar exploration, originating from a university research programme in 1993. The line is defined by its “expedition-first” philosophy: the ship is merely a tool to get guests into the wilderness, not a destination in itself. Unlike luxury competitors that emphasise butler service, Oceanwide focuses on maximizing shore time, offering flexible itineraries dictated by weather and wildlife rather than rigid schedules.

The brand is unique for its “Basecamp” concept, available on select voyages. On these departures, the ship acts as a floating hub for two to three days in a single location, allowing guests to engage in intensive activities like mountaineering, camping on the ice, kayaking, and even polar scuba diving without the interruption of relocating. Operations are strictly focused on the high latitudes: the Antarctic (Peninsula, Ross Sea, Weddell Sea) and the Arctic (Svalbard, Greenland). The fleet is purpose-built or ice-strengthened to the highest standards, with the flagship m/v Hondius and sister ship m/v Janssonius being the first vessels in the world built to “Polar Class 6” specifications, equivalent to the rigorous 1A Super ice class.
